Synonymous with “assessment for learning”, these checks occur as an incorporated and integral part of the instructional process to inform how the teacher will need to instruct next in the cycle. This course will serve as an introduction or refresher as to the purpose and opportunities available through the Naviance College and Career Readiness System. Naviance is a web-based program that assists students in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, exploring various college and career options, targeting strengths, and creating a plan of action for success in the middle and high school years as the foundational piece for learning at the secondary level, and success beyond high school. This course will provide information on what is involved in reading and performing music. Examples will be given of what is expected of students when they are reading a music score. Also, deep breathing will be practiced and discussed, i.e. how does the thoracic diaphragm pertain to singing or playing an instrument. Participants will have the opportunity to learn chord structures, time and key signatures, and see the steps students go through as they advance in music literacy. See how the study of music relates to math and science and how this connection could be used in the classroom.

Wouldn’t it be exciting to whet the appetite of those needing motivation and quench the thirst for knowledge in our classrooms? Using menus in the classroom is a great way to empower students to have a vested interest in their learning! We will explore a variety of menu formats, focusing on product differentiation. *Participants are encouraged to bring curriculum resources, to assist in developing specific menus to extend their classroom learning opportunities.

Included are practical suggestions for establishing, managing, and using math work stations in K-3. They will also help teachers learn how to organize math materials so they can use hands-on methods (with all those manipulatives) more effectively! An emphasis on academic vocabulary and increasing students' "math talk" is included.

Teachers with experience in design and facilitation will get to dive into the different elements of a standards based design. In order to be successful in the social studies classroom, students are expected to master content TEKS by analyzing primary and secondary sources, reading closely for content and meaning, conducting research using valid sources, and interpreting maps, graphs, and charts. These skills are known as Process Skills. Dr. Mahadevan from Texas A&M University, Assistant Professor and Extension Special Populations Specialist , will present this course. It is designed specifically to assist CTE and elective teachers in the creation of a learning environment that assists all students, but especially those with specific IEPs, accommodations and/or modifications, in the successful acquisition of the knowledge and skills of any given course of study. Teachers will have the opportunity to share, collaborate and work with leaders in the state in the areas of differentiation, spiraled learning and collaborative/peer teaming.
SpringBoard Mathematics textbooks and curriculum integrate investigative, guided, and directed activities for students from middle school through high school.
During this full-day session we will be focusing on the design aspect of Project Based Learning. Teachers new to PBL or needing a refresher will get to view and experience first hand the different elements of a standards based design. Participants will get to work with peers to create a standards based project they can use with their students and teachers will develop a “toolkit” to utilize during the school year to help facilitate the design of solid projects.

In order for students to better understand mathematical concepts through problem solving and reasoning they need effective practice and time to develop a “conversation” with others about their mathematical thinking. One of the most important instructional tools we can provide for our students is the opportunity to “talk” out loud about how they solve mathematical problems. This session focuses on how to develop student skills for process thinking and mathematical communication. Science Cut Ups are manipulative activities designed to help teach science concepts and/or science process skills. Learn from Mike and Tina how you can use them effectively in class.
