Effective small group reading instruction involves accelerating reading progress through close, careful observation of students' reading behaviors and utilizing prescriptive strategy based comprehension instruction. In this session we will focus on strategic reading instruction that focuses on students reading increasingly challenging texts with accuracy, deep comprehension and fluency, not simply moving students through levels.
Reading involves lifting meaning from the printed page. Comprehension occurs when skilled readers interact with the text and self-question, infer, make connections, summarize, synthesize and relate.

Join us for this fast-paced day as we look at what it means to help students, grades 6-12, become not only better readers but lifetime readers. This workshop will focus on the principles and the strategies that will help all students, even those who struggle the most with texts, read them with deeper engagement, comprehend them more fully, and assess their implications more thoughtfully and responsibly.
Small groups and the teacher table are not just for the elementary classroom. Let's revisit the benefits of small-group instruction and the logistics of making it work for your students. We will design a set of stations and small-group activities that align with the TEKS and prepare students for success!
In this 3 hour workshop we will take a closer look the Units of Study and the components of the Writer's Workshop, and focus on strategies for improved classroom implementation. Teachers and administrators will learn overarching plans and precise details that can help students reach and exceed the high expectations of our TEKS. You will leave with an understanding of where we are headed with Writing Instruction, and resources to help you along the way!
